The Salt of the Earth is impressive, but you have to end up wondering… eventually a very rich photographer would travel to places around the world, taking aesthetically pleasing pictures of people in agony. I don’t think he was a cynic, he did it as an optimist, hoping the images might bring some awareness and change, but the gap between his freedom of choice and movement and the complete lack of freedom of the observed remains.
